The Best of 2017

Happy New Year! Hope everyone had an awesome New Year’s celebration and is feeling refreshed for the start of 2018. 2017 is officially over and I can truly say it was a pretty great year for me! So many things happened and I’m so thankful for the memories that came out of it. These are some of the most significant things that came out of this year!

I figured out my major.

This was the main source of my stress this past year and the past few years, actually. I’m a perfectionist, so when I got into college, it was really hard not knowing what I wanted to do (for the rest of my life)–as people just love to ask you what your major is and what your life plan is.

But, then I discovered graphic design and it sort of combines a few things that I love, so it just kind of clicked that it’s what I want to do with my life. I’m not only content with it, but I really enjoy it. My advice if you’re in the same situation–know that it takes time and everything will fall it to place so try you’re best not to stress about it (I know that’s easier said than done)

I started blogging.

Probably my most favorite thing about this year. Thanks to some of my friends that encouraged me, I decided to start a blog after building my instagram up, which in itself, was also one of my favorite parts about this year. Kind of out of nowhere, I started taking my instagram more seriously and built it into more than just a hobby.

Then, I decided to take it further and make this blog! My advice–if you’re contemplating doing something that has the potential to bring you happiness, whether it’s blogging or something completely different, do it. There’s no harm in trying and it could be something that changes your life.

I made amazing friends.

I transferred schools last year, and I kind of had a hard time settling in at first, but overtime, I made some lovely friends, and finally felt I’m where I belong–as cliche as that sounds haha.

But also, I’ve been lucky enough to make some amazing friends through instagram and blogging, and have also been lucky enough to meet them in person. It’s kind of awesome how this can form such good friendships.

I pushed myself out of my comfort zone.

If you didn’t know, I’m a huge introvert and pretty shy in real life–I always have been. But, this year, I feel like I’ve grown so much in this area by pushing myself out of my comfort zone. One example, in the past years, I would have never been comfortable taking pictures of myself (like the ones you see on my instagram) or even writing to people like I am now, but, since it’s part of the whole blogging thing, I actually don’t mind it and enjoy it now.

I actually find it so much easier to express myself through taking pictures and writing blog posts, so I definitely recommend trying it out if you feel the same way.

I grew in my faith.

This one relates to every one of these, because this year wouldn’t have been possible without this. I’ve always been a Christian, but over the past few years, I decided I really wanted to grow my faith. After everything that has come out of this year, it kind of puts things in perspective in this area and just makes me want to build this relationship even further.

And here are a few of my top posts & memories from 2017:

I ate a lot of smoothie bowls and drank a lot of smoothies.

I went to some farmer’s markets and picked berries & peaches.

I ate a lot of dessert, specifically, dairy free ice cream and sorbet.

I drank a lot of coffee & watched a lot of netflix.

I cuddled with my dog a lot and pet lots of adorable dogs.

I went to the beach and drank some la croix.

I became obsessed with flowers & took a lot of pictures of them.

I explored the city a lot.

I became obsessed with wall murals.

And now, a few of my goals for 2018:

  • Drink more water
  • Increase my photography skills
  • Grow my blog and instagram
  • Read more for fun
  • Pray & grow in my faith further
  • Exercise regularly
  • Travel every opportunity I get
  • Eat healthier (more whole foods)
  • Try to stress less

Thank you so much for reading, everyone, and for following along on this journey with me! May your 2018 be everything you want it to be! 🙂

I love reading what people have done last year and how they’ll grow from here on out. I too am such an introvert, shy, get nervous when meeting new people but I’m really proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone, forcing myself to go out and meet new people, and start a blog! Good luck to you, Mattie!

I am so proud with what you accomplished in 2017! I used to be really shy too and as I’ve gotten older, I’ve broken out of my shell! I think your goals for 2018 are really realistic and I wish you the best of luck!

What an incredible year – it is kind of scary how similar we are (although I am out of college)! I took the plunge and launched my travel blog kind of like you. I was so very interested in travel and now I run a blog which is just tough work but I want to spend all of my time on it because I enjoy it.

I also have made a point to take more photos of myself and it was awkward at first but I am getting better at being the subject (I am a photographer so being behind the camera was my usual comfy job!) My goal for the new year is to try to not be such a dork in most of my photos.
